In 2006, yep 13 years ago, Harvard Medical School published a succinct list; 12 Ways to Keep Your Brain Young. They have since made a few tweaks to the post, however, left it up as an active resource on their website.
It has really only been in the last few years that lifestyle health approaches in support of the brain have gone mainstream. (In fact, sometimes I even have to take a step back in making that sort of claim since I work in a proactive bubble as an integrative health focused practitioner). However, last year, popular health and wellness media sources such as Mind Body Green, put it on the top wellness trends to watch in 2019 list!
Cognitive related diseases, such as Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, are increasing in worldwide prevalence. In fact, Alzheimer's is considered one of the fastest growing epidemics in the western world. Scientifically, we now understand that lifestyle and environmental factors do play a role in their manifestation.
Ding, ding, ding!
Did you read that last sentence?
I hope so. Also, this is exactly why the focus of my next free 5-day virtual challenge will be centered on simple, daily shifts in your lifestyle in further support of the health of your brain.
This will run from April 29th to May 3rd, 2019.
Participation is simple. Sign up HERE, watch your inbox for instructions, join our private Facebook group, and take advantage of the daily activities.
You may notice a few new faces or names in the streamlining of this challenge as I now have some lovely marketing consultants working in conjunction with me.
On behalf of all of us, we can't wait to see you in the challenge!

Wow! How impactful to see this article, Lose Weight the Functional Medicine Way, published this month.
"We eat fewer whole foods, more processed and inflammatory foods, and we're taking in more environmental toxins. Many of us work sedentary jobs and don't get enough exercise. We're not eating enough foods rich in probiotics and prebiotics that support gut health."
~ Integrative Health Matters, Tyler, TX
They elaborate further with 7 key focus areas to incorporate into a weight loss plan;
When I designed my coaching packages, I looked at ways to leverage evidence-based approaches to behavior change with what we know from functional medicine. In many circumstances, factors such as those listed above receive little to no emphasis and, therefore, patients do not observe favorable, lasting results. Taking the functional approach to weight loss is supportive of whole health and sustainable wellness. I believe, moving forward, it is of utmost service to incorporate these areas into any health program, but especially ones that center on losing weight!
Ask me how my Kick Start and Intensive programs incorporate these approaches.

Performance is physical, mental, and emotional... all of which center around health and well-being. I am thrilled with this collaborative presentation across physical fitness, lifestyle health, and healthful meal preparation. We are sharing this with the University of Illinois School of Public Health's wellness committee next week! More details on our event flyer.
Lifestyle health coaching encompasses a broad scope of health and healthcare professionals including, but not limited to, those formally trained in nursing, nutrition and dietetics, exercise science, psychology, health education and promotion, wellness, and public health applications.
Those focused in lifestyle health coaching will be most particularly centered on participant behavior change, full person assessments, dimensions of wellness, motivational triggers, and other lifestyle related influences. They will be knowledgeable about healthcare settings, delivery, and systems of care.

My WEGO profile lends towards autoimmune related conditions which is an area near and dear to my heart. I am also happy to advocate for, support, teach and empower those afflicted with a range of signs and symptoms related to overall disconnect in well-being. Helping you to discover practical, real-life solutions to live most optimal and kick down barriers that may be thrown your way is both the art and practice that I strive for.
Although this may be well under the radar for those of you not training within the areas of integrative health and wellness, it is exciting news for myself as a health professional to announce the re-brand of Holistic Nutrition Lab training program to Functional Nutrition Lab (FxNA). As we move forward in the assessment, support, and treatment of various chronic conditions related to lifestyle and environmental factors, the tools and frameworks that allow us to operate with greater efficiency and get to the bottom of complex, chronic conditions will be critical. Functional frameworks support us across clinical and allied health professions to do just that! Although we have been leveraging these tools in our training and practice, the new name makes it slightly more official :).
